If you’re looking for a phone with some sweet MP3 playin’ capabilities, you should look no further. It’s seriously better than any iPod shuffle ever. I’d go as far as saying it’s better than even the iPod video (yes, this phone can play videos, as long as they’re in a certain format), but the iPod video can hold a lot more. I think the W810i is limited to a 4gb Memory Stick Pro Duo, though I’m not completely sure of that. I just don’t think there’s anything bigger than that readily available. Personally, I’ve got a 2gb memory stick in there, and that’s plenty for me. I would have gotten the 4gb, but the 2gb was on sale with a mail in rebate and free shipping, so I just had to get it. If you’re really into music, I don’t think anyone should need more than 4gb at any given time. Yeah, I know it’s more convenient not to have to change out your songs all the time, but 4gb is A LOT of songs. Let’s see, I’ll get my calculator out.. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the average MP3 is 3.5mb, and the average CD has 12 songs on it. From there, I can say that a 4gb card can hold over 1,100 songs, which is approximately 90 CDs. That should be enough for anyone, unless they are clinically insane.
Camera phones have become a lot more popular recently. My last phone had a camera in it, and to tell you the truth, I didn’t use it a whole lot. I mean, yeah it was really convenient just because it was in a device I already always had with me, but it crapped out some very ill-looking pictures. This phone, on the other hand, delivers some very, very healthy-looking photos. This phone features a 2mp (two megapixel) camera with AUTO-FOCUS. This thing is almost as good as my first real digital camera, an old HP, which had around 2.4mp. This phone’s camera might even be considered better, because it has a whole bunch of settings such as Macro, White Balance, and ‘Effects.’ My old HP didn’t have that. It even has a flash, which turns on like a flashlight until you take a picture, then gets a bit brighter when you take the shot. It’s really quite an impressive, feature-packed camera. It even has a nice little orange mirror right by the lens, so you can take those oh-so-artsy MySpace (or Facebook) photos of yourself. One of the coolest things about this phone as a camera is that when you want to use it as a camera, you turn it sideways, and it actually turns into a little camera. Simply awesome.
Compared to the W600i, which is arguably Sony Ericsson’s last popular phone in the US, this phone is way cooler. I mean, the W600i is pretty neat with its neat-o swivel action and easily-changeable faceplates, but this here W810i is much sturdier. You CAN change the faceplate on the W810i, too, it’s just slightly more complicated and might void the warranty. And the swivel action? Psh. Personally, I don’t really like that swivel action. I mean, it’s cool and all, but it’s only cool because it’s different. I don’t see what advantages it offers (except the same advantages as I listed for flip phones earlier). I think the W810i is way cooler looking, too. They’re both about the same size closed. The W810i just has a better camera and is much more solid. No creaks come out of this beast when you give it a squeeze, which can’t be said about the W600i. I wouldn’t feel too dangerous playing catch with the W810i, either, because I’m pretty sure, even though I haven’t tested it out, I think it’d still work nicely after being dropped a few times. It’s just that solid-feeling. Everything else about the W810i and W600i are about the same, though, from the Walkman capability to the Bluetooth and Infrared ports, but the W600i has speakers that get a little bit louder. The speakers are about the same quality, but the W600i just gets louder. Overall, the W810i kicks the ass of all other cell phones I’ve used, plain and simple.
